Shirley A. Schubert
Bridgewater, NJ
Shirley A. Schubert, 89, of Bridgewater, NJ, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 3, 2025 after a difficult but mercifully short illness.
Shirley was born in Staten Island, NY to Leif and Olga Piersen, and grew up with her beloved sisters Alice and Lillian and brothers Albert and Gordon in the heavily Norwegian-influenced section of Westerleigh. Shirley attended Port Richmond High School and was always proud of her achievement as a member of the School's Permanent Honor Role. It was during high school that she met the love of her life, Edmund Schubert, Jr. The two later married in 1958 and enjoyed 55 years of marriage. Prior to the birth of her first child, she was employed as a legal secretary at AT&T's headquarters in New York.
Shirley raised her family in East Brunswick, NJ and was was active in the PTA and the East Brunswick Women's Club and served as a girl scout leader. Shirley impressed the value of education on her four children and was especially proud that all of her children graduated with college degrees.
Upon Edmund's retirement, the couple moved to their dream home in Greentown, Pennsylvania where they enjoyed country living, entertaining friends and hosting visits by their growing number of grandchildren. Summers were spent barbecuing poolside and picnicking at near by lakes. Winters meant snowmobiling as well as annual trips to Destin, FL and cruises to the Caribbean.
Upon Edmund's death, Shirley moved to Bridgewater, NJ to be closer to family. She became an active member of the Bridgewater Seniors where she cultivated new friendships and enjoyed the organization's social trips and parties. Shirley was also a regular bridge player at her condominium club house, and actively participated in the club's community gatherings. She continued to cruise, enjoying numerous trips to New England and Canada, the Caribbean and Hawaii with her sister-in-law, and oldest friend Carol Murphy.
Family was everything to Shirley. She is preceded in death by her beloved son Gary Edmund. Surviving are her dear son, Gregory Edmund and wife Julie Schubert of Marietta, GA; two loving daughters, Karen and husband Brian Lynch of North Venice, FL; Dr. Kristie and husband James Reilly of Bridgewater, NJ. Her eight grandchildren were the joy of her life: Dr. Kirsten Lynch and husband Dr. Roy Frostig, Jason Edmund and wife Wilson Schubert; William Leif Schubert and wife Kalie Grantham Schubert; Brigid Lynch; Chase Schubert; Liam Edmund Reilly and fiancée Kacey Jennings; Declan Edmund Reilly, and Kyle Schubert. Shirley was "Gigi" to two adorable great grandchildren Hannah Schubert and Noa Lillian Frostig and she was overjoyed to learn of the upcoming birth of grandson Brooks Edmund Schubert in March 2026.
The family would like to acknowledged and thank the many, many people who were supportive during Shirley's tragic illness. We would especially like to acknowledge by name Mark and Laurel Anderson, Brieana Bailey, Dorothy Rogers, Carol Murphy, Timothy Murphy, and Patricia Murphy for their love and support during the final weeks of Shirley's illness.
