Obituary

Shirley A. Furino, age 80, of Flemington, New Jersey, passed away on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at RWJ University Hospital Somerset. She was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and moved to Plainfield, New Jersey at a young age.

A 1963 graduate of Plainfield High School, Shirley went on to earn her degree from Dean College before being employed at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill and Warren, New Jersey. There she broke ground as the first woman promoted to the Bell Labs Ordering and Inventory Department.

In 1970, Shirley married her childhood sweetheart, George M. Furino. The two first met in kindergarten, sparking a lifelong bond that grew into a beautiful marriage and partnership. Together they built a wonderful life and family and were blessed with three sons - Greg, Randy, and TJ. Over the years, they made their home across Central New Jersey in many towns including Martinsville, Bridgewater, Annandale, Basking Ridge, Whitehouse Station, and finally Flemington, where they enjoyed many happy years surrounded by family and friends.

After taking time to raise her children, Shirley returned to work alongside her husband at Furino & Sons, Inc. in Plainfield and later in Bayonne, New Jersey. She helped modernize the company by creating its first computerized billing system.

Shirley and George shared a lifetime of love, laughter, and adventure. They cherished summers at their beloved shore home in Toms River, where they spent countless happy days with family. Years later, the couple joyfully repurchased that same home to make new memories with their five grandchildren. They also enjoyed golfing together in New Jersey and at their winter home in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

In 2023, Shirley attended her 60th Plainfield High School reunion, sharing wonderful memories while reconnecting with many old friends. She recently celebrated her 80th birthday, surrounded by all five of her beloved grandchildren.

A lover of crime and mystery novels and Law & Order marathons, Shirley was endlessly sharp-witted, keen on dates, and known for her quiet strength and devotion to her family.

She is predeceased by her parents, Henry R. and Kathryn Yurko Vickers, her husband George M. Furino, and her son Randy Furino.

Shirley is survived by her sons George Gregory (Greg) and Timothy J. (TJ), her daughter-in-law Rachael, her sister Kathryn Bousquet, and her five treasured grandchildren: John, George, Michael, Olivia, and Peri. She also leaves behind many cherished nieces and nephews.
