Sheila M. Stewart

Sheila M. Stewart (King), 92, of Green Brook, NJ and a long-time resident of Rahway, NJ, died February 9, 2024 at Complete Care at Green Knoll in Bridgewater, NJ.

Sheila was born on April 28, 1931 in the village of Bolton-le-Sands, England, U.K., the daughter of John Harris King and Nellie (Pierce) King. She lived in Bolton-le Sands with her family and became a beautician, running her own salon in the village. She emigrated to the United States in July 1964, living first in Massapequa, NY before moving to North Arlington, NJ where she met the love of her life James Stewart, who had emigrated from Bellshill, Scotland several years earlier.

Sheila and Jim married on June 3, 1967 in Kearny, NJ, where they attended the First Presbyterian Church and had many friends in the thriving British and Irish immigrant community in the area.

They moved to Linden, NJ and then settled in Rahway in 1973, where they lived for many years before moving to Green Brook in the early 2000s. Sheila and Jim were active members of the Second Presbyterian Church of Rahway and later attended The Reformed Church of Linden.

Sheila held several different jobs, including as school bus driver before her son was born. In the late 1980s and 1990s she returned to her professional roots and worked as beautician at the Rahway Geriatrics Center. Sheila was a proud and active member of the Duke of Cornwall Chapter of the Daughters of the British Empire, an American society of women of British and Commonwealth of Nations birth or ancestry. She held many positions in the chapter, hosted many monthly meetings at her home and loved and cherished all her fellow members and their families.

She was especially passionate about the D.B.E.'s philanthropy, the Victoria Home nursing home in Ossining, NY. She often wrote profiles of the home's residents for the D.B.E.'s newsletter and attended many events at the home over the years. Sheila was also well known for sending birthday cards to almost everyone who'd crossed her path in life - family, friends, friends' children and grandchildren, her son's friends and their children. Her first order of business every January was to copy everyone's birthdays from her day planner for the old year to the planner for the New Year.

Sheila was predeceased by her parents, her brothers Bernard King and Michael King and her nephew Steven King, all of England.

She is survived by her husband Jim of Green Brook, NJ, her son Andrew Stewart, his wife Cynthia, grandchildren Connor, Erin and Devin Stewart, all of Bridgewater, NJ and her great-nieces Kennedy Fratto and Molly Fratto of Warren, NJ. She is also survived by her nephews Richard King and Nicholas King, Nicholas' wife Becky and their son, her great-nephew Oliver, all of Lancashire, England, her great-nieces Samantha and Nicola King of England and many other relatives around the world.

A memorial service will be held on A memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 15, 2024 from 3-6pm at the Branchburg Funeral Home, 910 Rt. 202 South Branchburg, NJ, 08876. A prayer service will begin at 5:30pm.
