Robert B. Mathews

Robert (Rob) Brian Mathews, 53 of Flemington New Jersey passed away at home peacefully with friends and family on June 15, 2023. Born in Somerville, Rob grew up in the Bridgewater/Raritan area for before moving to Flemington 24 years ago. He graduated from Bridgewater Raritan High School West, Class of 1987. Rob worked for Local 254 of Edison as a Union Carpenter.

Rob was best known by many for always having his signature smile on his face hence his nickname "Smiley". He was a good  and loyal friend to many, and he appreciated the ones he trusted and loved. Rob loved being with his friends, whether it was on the job bouncing around busting chops, or just hanging out together laughing and carrying on about whatever. Always smiling!

Rob had a passion for motorcycles and was a member of the American Motorcycle Association. His love of motorcycles lead him to racing competitively, both on dirt and asphalt, giving him the nickname "Rocket Rob". He also loved being in the outdoors, especially fishing and camping with his son's Brett and Chad.

Rob was his happiest though when around, or just talking about, his two boys Brett and Chad - he adored his two sons and is very proud of the young men they have become. Rob loved and cherished the moments working on and riding motorcycles with them. He was always watching them, full of pride, as they grew up, all the while guiding them through life's obstacle course. He was a wonderful, devoted, father.

Rob, a carpenter by trade, was always known for taking pride in his work, never taking the short cut, or quick fix, and was all too eager to offer these skills to friends and family when needed. He was loved by many, and all that knew Rob, knew him to be a laidback caring guy who always cared about family and friendship.

He is preceded in death by his beloved mother, Catherine Higgins Mathews (April 2023) and his grandparents.

He is survived by his two sons, Brett and Chad Mathews, loving mother to both - Christine, Rob's father Abner Mathews, his two brothers Jimmy and Oren, and sister in-law Joanie and a niece and four nephews.

A memorial visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 21, 2023 from 6-8pm at the Branchburg Funeral Home 910 Rt. 202 South, Branchburg, NJ 08876.
