Robert J. Johnston, 73, of Bridgewater, NJ, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 12, 2020 at Bridgeway Care Center surrounded by his loving family. Born in Mt. Vernon, OH, he resided in Linden for 3 years before moving to Bridgewater 36 years ago.
Bob graduated from Vermilion High school in June of 1965. He then went on to graduate from the University of Toledo, in Toledo, Ohio where he received his B.S. for Physics and in Mathematics in June of 1973. After receiving both degrees, he graduated from Rutgers University in 1987 with a Master's Degree in Physics and then graduated in 1989 with another master's degree in Applied Mathematics. From then, Robert went to Steven's Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ where he also graduated in 1996 and received his master's degree in Science Technology Management.
Bob worked for Exxon Mobil Research and Engineering Company and both locations in Linden, NJ and Clinton, NJ laboratories which co-authored many publications, presentations, and patents.
Bob enjoyed Astronomy and Telescopes, American and World History, Scrimshaw, home projects, exercising, particularly weight lifting, and taking family road trips.
Bob was a member of the ExxonMobil research Club, ExxonMobil Annuitants Club of Morris Area, American Physical Society, and North Branch Reformed Church.
He is preceded in death by his beloved parents Russell and June Johnston.
Surviving are his loving wife of 39 years Linda Marshall Johnston, one dear son Matthew and wife Sara of West Caldwell, NJ; one loving daughter Mary and fiancé Collin Crookenden of Arlington, VA; one brother Russell Johnston of Victoria, Canada; a special niece Danielle Cheung of Cananda; one adored granddaughter Adelyn Shay, and his two feline loves Marilyn and Audrey.
A viewing will be held on Monday, March 16, 2020 from 6-8pm at the Branchburg Funeral Home 910 Rt. 202 south, Branchburg, NJ 08876.
Funeral services are private.
