Richard "Dick" Voorhees, 83, of Hillsborough, NJ, passed away on Wednesday, September 29, 2021. He will be remembered as a true public servant, who dedicated his entire life to the service of others. Dick served in the U.S. Marines Corps: 3rd Division at Okinawa and Quantico, VA from 1957-1960. Dick began his career with the Bound Brook Police Department in 1960 before starting in 1965 as a charter member of the Bridgewater Township Police Department. He climbed up the chain of command, eventually becoming Chief of Police in 1987 where he continued until his retirement in 2000. Dick is best known for founding Operation Home Free in 1984 with Trailways Bus Company and the International Chiefs of Police, a program that provides a free bus ride home to runaway children. The program has continued and is coordinated by the National Runaway Switchboard and Greyhound bus company. He pioneered school bus safety programs, child safety, community policing and was selected as PARADE Magazine's Police Officer of the Year in 1984 for his implementation of the Home Free program. Among his other career highlights he helped organize the Kelsey Charity Run in 1995 and pioneered; Water Rescue, HAZMAT, motorcycle patrol and established the first volunteer Domestic Violence Crisis Intervention Team. Dick was a volunteer for many organizations. He was a life member of the Bound Brook Rescue Squad, serving as President, Captain and Chief during his 27 years of service. He was the Chief Driver for Somerset Medical Center's Mobile Intensive Care Unit (M.I.C.U.), member of the Somerset County Special Olympics, Far Hills Race Committee, Midland School Race Committee, United Way of Somerset County, Board of Trustee for the Samaritan Homeless Interim Program (SHIP), Somerset County Youth Commission and Chairperson of the Child Abuse and Missing Children, Somerset County Human Potential Committee, past president of the Somerset County Chiefs of Police. Dick has received numerous career achievements and recognitions. He is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Kathryn and Clarence Voorhees and his sisters, Carol Duhamel and twin Joyce Ernst. Surviving are his loving wife of 17 years, Lori Voorhees, two dear sons, Richard P. Voorhees of Ft Lauderdale Fl; Craig and his wife, Eleanor Voorhees of Lambertville, NJ; his daughter Christine and her husband, Robert Hiatt of Tampa, FL; and his step-daughter, Christine Gwin of Hillsborough, NJ; his first wife, Dorothy Harrington of Bridgewater, NJ; and his two brothers, Gary Voorhees of Middlesex, NJ; Lee and, his spouse, Susan of Long Valley, NJ; along with his three adored grandchildren, Eve, Julia, and Zen. A viewing will be held on Tuesday, October 5, 2021 from 4-8pm at the Branchburg Funeral Home 910 Rt. 202 South Branchburg, NJ 08876. A prayer service will begin at the funeral home on Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at 8:45am. A worship service will take place at Clover Hill Reformed Church at 10am in Hillsborough, NJ.
