Peter Markos Branchburg, NJ Peter Markos, 85, of Branchburg, NJ, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 21, 2021 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Newark, NJ on November 20, 1935 to his beloved parents, Anna Pavlakos and Sarandos Markos. Peter lived in Newark for most of his young life, then became a resident of Union, NJ for 20 years, before residing in Branchburg for the last 32 years. Peter was a graduate of Westside High School Class of 1954. He served his country in the United States Army, stationed in Germany. He attended Montclair State University, where he received his undergraduate degree in education, followed by Kean University, where he received his Masters in Student Personnel Services and PhD in Principalship and Supervision. Peter worked as the Vice Principal at Abraham Clark High School in Roselle, NJ. He loved teaching and interacting with countless young people whose lives he touched for 36 years. He retired in 1997. Peter loved the church and was dedicated to serving his entire life. He was a devoted church basketball coach and youth advisor, President of the Parish Council, and along with his wife, Elaine, and other advisors, expanded Sights and Sounds, a youth talent showcase, which went on to be the template for Orthodox youth programs throughout the country. His was a member of St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church in Sarasota FL, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Westfield, NJ and St. Anna Greek Orthodox Church in Flemington, NJ, where he was one of the founders. He often said to his family, "You will always get more in return by serving than the time you put in." Through his lifelong work he made countless friendships and connections in the Greek community and was fondly referred to as "Coach." After his retirement he embarked on a project collaboration commemorating the Greeks of Newark, New Jersey which resulted in the publication of a book and exhibit at the Newark Public Library. Peter was an avid reader and devoted sports fan closely following his Yankees, Knicks and NY Giants. He enjoyed traveling worldwide, listening to Frank Sinatra and will always be remembered for his love of Greek music and dancing. He would be the first and last one on the dance floor, frequently dancing all night until closing time, well after his younger peers. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Elaine Mendrinos Markos; his dear son, Ronald and wife, Ginny Markos, of Lower Gwynedd, PA; his loving daughter, Marie-Alaina Jenkins, of Branchburg, NJ; his dear sister, Antoinette Genakos, of Ocean Gate, NJ; three cherished grandchildren, Elena, Christopher, and Daniel; his sisters in law and brothers in law and many adored nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Gus. Viewing will be held on Thursday, June 24, 2021 from 5-8 PM at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church 250 Gallows Hill Road Westfield, NJ 07090. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, June 25, 2021 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church followed by interment at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield. Arrangements are under the direction of the Branchburg Funeral Home 910 US Highway 202 South, Branchburg, NJ 08876. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Youth of Holy Trinity, 250 Gallows Hill Road Westfield, NJ 07090 or St. Anna GOYA, 85 Voorhees Corner Rd, Flemington, NJ 08822.
