William Snyder, Sr.
Bridgewater, NJ

William “Bill” Snyder Sr., 86, of Bridgewater, NJ died on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2018, at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset in Somerville, NJ. Mr. Snyder was a former officer and director of the A.M. Best Company in Oldwick, NJ.

Born on March 26, 1932 to Arthur & Kathryn Staubitzer Snyder in Valley Stream, NY, Mr. Snyder was raised there and in Garden City, NY where he graduated from Garden City High School in 1949. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in business administration from Hofstra University in 1954.

A former Company Commander & 1st Lieutenant with the 21st Ordnance Company attached to the 101st Airborne Division of the US Army and former Company Commander & Captain with the Civil Air Patrol - Search and Rescue, Mr. Snyder served in the US Armed Forces from 1954 to 1957.

Before joining A.M. Best in 1958, Mr. Snyder served as a Special Agent with the Insurance Company of North America in Philadelphia, PA. Over the course of his 38-year career at A.M. Best, he served in various positions and, starting in 1966, was an officer of the company in-charge of one or more of the company's service operations including Building Engineering Services, Printing Services and Purchasing Services. Mr. Snyder also held a commercial pilot's license and served for many years as the company's Corporate Pilot. He retired in 1996 from A.M. Best and served as a Director on the Board of Directors since 2009.

Bill also held a 100-ton U.S.C.G. Master's License. For the past 40 years, he was the owner operator and Captain of Hi Hook II, Inc., a professional charter fishing company based out of Sandy Hook, NJ.

An avid outdoors man, Bill enjoyed hunting and fishing. In search of game and fish, his travels took him as far as Alaska and Costa Rica. A skilled craftsman, he excelled in light carpentry. A talented singer, he was a member of several barbershop choruses and sang bass for The Ol’ Pals quartet. Bill was a true family man and enjoyed the simple pleasures of life.

Surviving are his beloved wife, Sandra Van Siclen Snyder, his bride of 60 years; his four loving children, son William Snyder, Jr. and wife Patricia of Matawan, NJ; daughter Nancy Snyder Carr and husband Robert of Perth, NY; daughter Diane Snyder of Hillsborough, NJ and daughter Kathleen Snyder LaFave and husband William of Morristown, NJ. He is also survived by his 3 cherished grandchildren, Robert William, William Edward, and Cassandra Jean as well as by many loving nieces and nephews.

Viewing will be held Thursday, September 6, 2018 from 2-4 and 7-9pm at the Branchburg Funeral Home 910 US Highway 202 South, Branchburg, NJ 08876.
A prayer service will be held on Friday, September 7, 2018 at 10:30am at the funeral home followed by private cremation.
