Aloysius “Lali” Bauer passed peacefully on Thursday, July 26, 2018 at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born on November 6, 1933 in Érd, Hungary, Al was the eldest of six children.
Al was a student at the Technical University of Budapest when he fled to the United States in 1956 as a refugee to escape the violent uprising against the Soviet Union. Upon arrival, he married his childhood sweetheart and they settled in Bridgeport, Connecticut where he earned a degree in engineering. Al and Helen then moved to Fairfield where they had four children. He was active in the Holy Name Society at St. Emery’s Church and various philatelic societies. He was an avid stamp collector, family photographer, travel enthusiast and the ultimate handy man. He worked as an electrical and traffic engineer in Norwalk for many years. In 1976, the family moved to Bridgewater, NJ where Al worked at various engineering firms. He retired in December of 1998 from the New York Port Authority at the World Trade Center in NYC.
He loved his Homeland and annually exhibited at the Hungarian Festival in New Brunswick, NJ. His exhibits strove to teach festival-goers about Hungarian culture and history. This was a pride and a love he instilled in his children and he relished teaching all people about Hungary.
For 62 years, Al was the beloved husband of Helen (Ilona Vajda) Bauer. He was the father of Helen (Oster) of Danbury , CT; Susan and husband John Terracciano of Bridgewater, NJ; Alice and husband Scott Bauer-Montgomery of Denver, CO and Al and Lydia Bauer of Olathe, KS. He is survived by his ten cherished grandchildren Erik, Amy, Michael, Rachael, Thomas, Robert, Elena, Francesca, Gabriella and Serafina and two adored great-grandchildren Jackson and Jaden.
In addition to his immediate family, Al is also survived by his loving sister, Julianna Gieger, and dear brother, Istvan Bauer, in Hungary, and various nieces and nephews in both Hungary and the United States.
A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at 10am at St. Bernard’s Church. 500 US Highway 22, Bridgewater, NJ 08807.
Committal is private.
