Obituary

Lewis C. Saling Jr.

Hillsborough, NJ

Lewis C. Saling Jr., 74, of Hillsborough, NJ, passed away on Saturday, September 16, 2023 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Bridgewater, NJ, Lewis spent 47 years in Bridgewater and 20 years in Frenchtown before moving to Hillsborough.

Lewis graduated from Bridgewater Raritan West High School Class of 1967. He then went on to attend Trenton State College, which he left early to start a family.

Lewis had a number of careers throughout his life. As a very young man he worked for his brother Joe at his bike shop, Saling Cyclery in Branchburg. Then broke out on his own as a sales rep for Schwinn Bicycles, followed by Ross, Shogun, Falcon and finally Univega. Later he owned Ultra Distributing, a bicycle accessories business, with his best friend Joe Gratkowski. Upon leaving the bicycle business he became a construction site supervisor and eventually became semi-retired and ran his own home improvement business, Saling Home Repair where he employed his two grandsons.

Mr. Saling was a member of the Somerset Wheelman Bicycle Club. He coached his daughters' softball team, loved discussing politics, building furniture, buying the latest technological gadget, teaching his grandchildren everything he knew, watching NASCAR and cycling races, and correcting everyone's grammar. He and his wife Linda also built their former home in Frenchtown which was a log home and a source of great pride.

Above all, Lew was a family man. His wife, children and grandchildren were the center of his world. He delighted in his extended family and was nearly as proud of his nieces and nephew as he was of his own children.

He is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Mary and Lewis C. Saling Sr.

Surviving are his lovely bride, as he liked to call her, of 53 years, Linda Cunningham Saling, two loving daughters, Wendy Saling and husband Stephen Horgan of Belle Mead, NJ; Hayley and husband Ray McHendry of Bound Brook, NJ; a dear brother, Joe and wife Dottie Saling of Bridgewater, NJ; two loving sisters, MaryLou and husband Phil Chalupa of East Hardwick, VT; Joanne and husband Tony Stout of Newark, OH; six cherished grandchildren, Aidan, Isabella, Delia, Owen, Collette, Violet, many loving nieces and nephews, and his canine companion, Pickle.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, September 21, 2023 from 4-8pm at the Branchburg Funeral Home 910 Rt. 202 South, Branchburg, NJ 08876.

Committal is private.
