Joyce Gammon Kuschke
Morristown, NJ
Joyce Gammon Kuschke, recently of Danville, KY and longtime resident of Morristown, NJ, died
peacefully on March 3, 2022.
She was born March 27, 1929 and grew up in East Providence, RI. In 1951 she graduated with a
nursing degree from the University of Rhode Island where she met her husband John. After
graduating she raised five children in Massachusetts and later New Jersey.
Joyce served as the school nurse at Hillcrest Elementary School in Morris Township for 20 years
where she bandaged, soothed, and cared for several generations of children. (It was rumored
that some students would feign illness to be able to spend time with Nurse Kuschke.)
Joyce spent many summers on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire where she
served as the nurse at Camp Kehonka. Joyce was a warm and kind caretaker to the campers.
She was able to return for a visit a few years ago and paddle a canoe with the "wild geese flying
overhead."
Joyce was dedicated to running and finished many marathons and 10K races, competing well
into her 80's. She belonged to several book groups and was very devoted to all of her children,
grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Joyce's beautiful kitchen was always full of family
gatherings: birthdays, anniversaries, reunions, and holidays.
She volunteered in her community, and was active in the local YMCA. She was a member and
an Elder of the Presbyterian Church in Morristown, as well as a member of Circle 2.
Joyce was an avid reader and skier. She enjoyed cooking, baking, and sewing, especially clothes
for her children when they were little. The thing she enjoyed the most was spending time with
her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Joyce was preceded in death by her loving husband of 60 years, John Kuschke, who died in 2012,
and her grandson Henry C. Rosenthal, who died in 2017.
She is survived by her sister Thyra Laemmel and her husband Bert of N. Kingstown, RI, and five
children: Robyn Rosenthal and her husband Thomas of Branchburg, NJ; Jill Krauklis and her
husband Andrew of Downers Grove, IL; Ruth-Ann Morrison and her husband James of Danville,
KY; John Kuschke of Wilmington, NC; and Mark Kuschke of Rockaway, NJ. She leaves behind 14
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 11, 2022 at 11am at the Presbyterian Church on The Green, 57 East Park Place, Morristown, NJ 07960. Interment will follow at the church memorial garden.
