Obituary

John Charles McGuigan, 62, of Branchburg, New Jersey, passed away on Friday, August 7, 2026, at Hunterdon Medical Center.

Born in Somerville, New Jersey, John later made his home in Branchburg, where he lived for the past 15 years. John had always been a bit of a wanderer. He loved to travel, see new places, and was never someone who liked being tied down for too long.

Standing 6 feet 9 inches tall, John was hard to miss, both because of his size and his personality. Known to many as “Big John” and to others simply as “The Dude,” he was loud, outgoing, and loved a good time. At family gatherings, John was often one of the biggest personalities in the room and could always be counted on to bring plenty of conversation, laughter, and the occasional spirited exchange with his siblings.

Music was a big part of John's life. He loved playing guitar, especially during holidays and family gatherings, and would often make up his own music as he went. He also loved camping, cruising, traveling with his family, and finding a place wherever he went that he could call “his spot.” More recently, he bought a three wheeled trike and enjoyed getting out and riding.

John shared an especially close bond with his sister, Jayne. He made a point of visiting her whenever he could, spending time with her at her home and taking her out whenever possible. Their time together meant a great deal to both of them, and John was always looking for another chance to stop by, sit with her, or get her out for a while.

John worked at Compass Self Storage, where he helped with the day to day operations of the business.

John was predeceased by his parents, Jane Kelly and James J. McGuigan; his sister, Patricia McGuigan; and his brother, Michael McGuigan.

He is survived by his sisters, Kathy Wilhelmy and Jayne McGuigan, along with his loving nieces and nephews.

John lived life with a big personality and an even bigger presence. Whether you knew him as John, Big John, or The Dude, he was someone you remembered. His music, his stories, his laughter, and the unmistakable energy he brought with him will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, August 13, 2026 from 3pm-7pm at the Branchburg Funeral Home, 910 Rt. 202 South, Branchburg, NJ 08876. A prayer service will begin at the funeral home at 6:30pm. Committal is private.
