John W. Bergen

John Bergen of Branchburg, NJ, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 5, 2020 at Bridgeway Care. He was born in Jersey City, NJ on 6/23/1927 to Florence and Edward Bergen.
John graduated from St. Michael's High School in Jersey City in 1945. He was also graduate of the Electrical Technology program at Stevens Institute, Hoboken, in 1951.
A veteran of WWII, John served in the US Army Air Corps as an Aviation Engineer in the European Theatre.
John worked for Honeywell (formerly Bendix Corp) for 44 years as a Service Engineer and General Aviation Support Manager in the Commercial Systems Support Group before his retirement in 1992.
Married to his high school sweetheart Mary Elizabeth Rodgers for 63 years, they lived for 18 years in Kendall Park before moving to Branchburg 1974. They shared a love of music, especially the tunes of the 40s and 50s. Since their high school days, they loved to dance. Upon moving to Branchburg, they joined Branchburg B-Sharps club and began many joyful years of square dancing.
John was a communicant of Holy Trinity Church, Bridgewater. He was a past member of the Holy Name Society and volunteer at the church Bingo.
A member of the Branchburg Senior Club, John served terms as Vice President, President and Treasurer for the organization.
A lifelong learner, he was an avid reader, who especially liked books about history and government. An ardent sports fan of the Giants and Yankees, John also enjoyed going to Rutgers football and basketball games. One of his favorite activities was spending quality time with his family especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his beloved parents, his wife, five sisters, Florence, Bernadette, Marie, Helen and Peggy, and two brothers Edward and Thomas Bergen.
Surviving are his four children; John and wife Marie Bergen of Hillsborough, NJ; Bill Bergen of Stroudsburg, PA; Maureen and husband Bill Phillips of Branchburg, NJ; Kathleen and husband Bill Smith of Branchburg, NJ; one brother Eugene and wife Sun Bergen of Union Beach, NJ; one sister Geraldine Hawkins of LaSalle, IL; nine grandchildren, Kara, Clark, Ryan, Danica Keelen, Kasey, Brianne, Geena and Colleen and two great grandchildren Snow Rose and Isabella.
A viewing will on Thursday, October 8, 2020 from 3-7pm at the Branchburg Funeral Home 910 Rt. 202 South Branchburg, NJ 08876. A prayer service will begin at the funeral home on Friday, October 9, 2020 at 9:15am. A funeral mass will follow at Holy Trinity Church at 10am. Interment will follow at St. Bernard's Cemetery in Bridgewater, NJ.
