James Peter Sorace Sr., 92, of Bridgewater, NJ, died peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on April 29, 2017. He was born in Somerville on June 8, 1924 to the late Philominia and Pasquale Sorace. He spent most of his life in Raritan before moving to Bridgewater. Jim served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946 on the U.S.S Oakland as a crewmember and barber. Upon returning from the South Pacific, he and his cousin opened J & J Barbershop of Raritan in 1947. Jim's success came as he was able to adapt to the times when it came to hairstyles. He was quoted in 1997, "One young fellow… came to get his hair cut from the barber with the long white hair". In 1991 he was named "Best Barber" in Somerset County. Jim was an avid Yankees and Green Bay Packers fan. He was a member of the Somerville Elks and the VFW of Raritan. Jim and his family spent vacations on the Jersey Shore. He enjoyed spending quality time with his friends and family, especially his grandchildren. Jim was predeceased by parents, his son Jeffrey Scott Sorace (1991), 2 sisters and 2 brothers. Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Irene Gall Sorace; his dear son James Sorace Jr.; 2 loving daughters, Marsha (Albert) Pacelli and Kelly Ann (Frank) Patullo; and 3 cherished grandchildren, Frank Patullo, Tara Patullo and Vincent Pacelli. Viewing will be held Wednesday, May 3, 2017 from 4:00-8:00 pm at Branchburg Funeral Home, 910 US Highway 202 South, Branchburg NJ, 08876. A prayer service will begin on Thursday, May 4, 2017 at 9:15am at the funeral home. Funeral Liturgy will be held Thursday, May 4, 2017 at 10:00 am at the R.C. Church of St. Bernard of Clairvoux, Bridgewater. Entombment to follow at St. Bernard's Mausoleum.
