November 15, 1931 – May 24, 2025

Jadwiga Schreiber, a beloved mother, grandmother, caregiver, and resilient spirit, passed away peacefully at her home in Branchburg, New Jersey, on May 24, 2025, at the age of 93. A 20-year resident of Branchburg she was also a member of the Branchburg Senior Citizens Club and attended many functions sponsored by AARP.

Born on November 15, 1931, in Warsaw, Poland, Jadwiga came from a respected and well-known family. Her early years were marked by unimaginable hardship as World War II broke out and Germany invaded Poland. Jadwiga and her family were taken by Nazi forces and transported in a cattle car bound for the unknown. As the train approached a fateful fork in the tracks—one path leading to Auschwitz, the other to a work camp—the train turned toward the work camp. This was just one of many twists of fate that spared their lives.

Throughout their time in captivity, Jadwiga's family was separated multiple times, but through the courage and unwavering determination of her father, they miraculously stayed together. After liberation by American forces, the family spent time in a Displaced Persons (DP) camp before eventually emigrating to the United States.

Jadwiga, along with her sister and parents, settled outside of Boston, where they began to rebuild their lives. While there she fell in love with Henry Schreiber, also a Polish immigrant, resistance fighter and US Military Voluneteer. They married and moved to New Jersey, where they built a life rooted in love, faith, and family. Together, they raised their children, Ursula, Yolanda, Robbie, and Teddy and created a home filled with love, warmth and resilience.

Jadwiga was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother. Her greatest joy was spending time with family and being the dedicated grandmother to 5 grandchildren, Matthew Markewicz, Brian Markewicz, Zofia Schreiber, Thaddeus Schreiber and Alexander Schreiber.

Jadwiga will be remembered for her strength, grace, and unwavering love for her family. Her story is a testament to survival, hope, and the enduring power of the human spirit.

She is survived by her sister Melania Hoffman, daughter Ursula and husband Bruce Markewicz, grandchildren Matthew Markewicz, Brian Markewicz, Zofia Schreiber, Thaddeus Schreiber, Alexander Schreiber, and many nieces and nephews.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, May 29, 2025 from 3pm-7pm at the Branchburg Funeral Home, 910 Rt. 202 South, Branchburg, NJ 08876.

A prayer service will begin at the funeral home on Friday, May 30, 2025 at 9:15am. Funeral mass will take place at 10am at St. Bernard Church in Bridgewater, NJ. Burial to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover, NJ.
