Gregory J. Wheelan

Gregory J. Wheelan, 55, of Somerville, NJ, passed away on March 1, 2026 at home surrounded by loving family members following a long-term illness. Born in Somerville, Greg was affectionately called 'Googie' by family and close friends. He graduated from Bridgewater East High School, class of 1990.

Greg was a proud US Navy veteran who served during the Gulf War. Following his honorable service to our country, Greg began driving professionally earning his Class A commercial license with multiple specialty endorsements before becoming ill with a rare autoimmune muscle disease.

The most important things in Greg's life were his loving and devoted wife, Brenda, their three beautiful daughters, his precious grandson, and his close friends and extended family. Philosophical conversations were easily entered into with him and his wisdom was beyond his age. He enjoyed fishing, hiking, Formula 1 racing, long cruises on his custom one-of-a-kind Triumph trike motorcycle, an occasional fine cigar, Lord of the Rings books, college football, and most of all music. Music was central to Greg who played as a drummer and percussionist in several local bands over the years with his latest musical project being "Two Broke Vets" based in the Somerville area.

Greg was a generous man to those in need and was a member of the community charity group the Fraternal Order of Eagles and their associated sub-group, the Eagle Riders where he was active in charity events to help area families. He was well respected by those who knew him and had a warm, genuine, and unpretentious nature to him. He will be greatly missed by those fortunate enough to have known him.

He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Wheelan, and step-father, Robert Hans.

Surviving are his devoted mother, Alina Hans of SC, his loving and loyal wife, Brenda Wheelan, three cherished daughters, Kayla Wheelan of Somerville, Allison Wheelan of Port Murray, NJ, and Hannah Wheelan of Somerville, his older brother Thomas and wife Debbie Wheelan of Washington, NJ, sister Cindy and her husband Robert Herbig of NY, Colleen Wheelan-Schmitt of SC, an adored grandson, Jemal Boyd III, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends.

A viewing and celebration of Greg's life will be held on Sunday, March 8, 2026 at the Branchburg Funeral Home between the hours of noon and 4:00pm. Committal is private. A future specifically dedicated account to assist the family with services and medical costs will be made available to those who wish to contribute once established.
