Ernest A. Johnson Bridgewater, NJ Ernest A. Johnson, 91, of Bridgewater, NJ, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 10, 2016. He came to Bradley Gardens at the age of 12, when the fields were producing grain and there were a few summer homes with his parents, Saimi and Elias Johnson. Bradley's streets were dusty in the summer and muddy in the winter and walking was the medium of travel. As a child he found entertainment roaming the woods with his friends and skating on the many sources of water that were then unpolluted swimming holes. Mr. Johnson enlisted in the Navy to serve in WWII and was assigned to a seagoing fire-fighting repair tugboat in Italy. Its assignment was to assist in landings by putting out fires. They removed disabled ships from beaches to effect clear harbor docking for larger savage ships. Then with Italy and southern France under allied control, his ship was ordered to Okinawa for the fourth coming invasion. It sunk there in a cyclone. With the end of hostilities, he returned home to employment in the Veteran's Administration repairing all equipment common to Veteran's hospitals along the east coast. It was determined that this program was in conflict with private enterprise and was terminated. He was then employed by the Army and overhauled Nike missile components. He refused a transfer to a consolidated repair base in Schenectady, NY and instead began a 28 year employment with Ethicon, a J & J company. They produced surgical needles and the machines to make them. He is preceded in death by his parents Saimi and Elias Johnson; 2 brothers, William and Herbert; his sister Ellen Rivers; and a son in law, Craig Randolph. Ernest is survived by his beloved wife Dolores Alvaro Johnson, having married her in 1949, and two wonderful daughters, Valorie Randolph of Glen Gardner, NJ and Lynn Johnson of High Bridge, NJ. He was a life member of the American Legion Post 327, Bradley Gardens, and was a fireman and fire policeman and secretary of the Bradley Gardens Fire Department. He loved caring for his home and spending quality time with his family, especially his 2 daughters. He was well known for his keen sense of humor and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Mr. Johnson would like to offer his sincere apologies to those he may have offended and his eternal gratitude to his friends. Funeral services are private.
