Obituary

Elizabeth " Betty" Ann Schultz , 80, died Thursday, June 7, 2012 at home after a long battle with Chronic Lymphoma. Her children were at her bedside to comfort her throughout her passing. Betty was born in the Bronx, New York on June 29, 1931, and grew up in West Orange, New Jersey. After her marriage to Paul A. Schultz, they eventually settled in Martinsville, NJ where she remained from 1964 until her passing. Betty attended Juniata College in Huntingdon, PA were she received her BS in Education. She later obtained her Masters of Education from Rutgers University, in New Brunswick, NJ. Betty served for 28 years as an employee of the Bridgewater-Raritan School District. The majority of that time was spent as the Supervisor of Pupil Services until her retirement in February of 1997. Betty was the district's first Child Study Team Supervisor and was instrumental in developing a department for special education as part of the school system. During her career, she earned Certificates as a Reading Specialist, Learning Consultant and Teacher of the Handicapped. She maintained memberships in the NJ Principals and Supervisors Association, the NJ Division of Learning Consultants and the International Reading Association. Post retirement she served as a consultant and a home bound instructor for the district. In addition, throughout her career she spent many hours volunteering time to teach children requiring enhanced attention. In 1997 she received the Audrey and Frank Dittman Award for Outstanding Service, which acknowledges excellence and dedication to education. This award was acknowledged with letters from both Bill Clinton and Christie Todd Whitman. Her personal files are filled with heartfelt letters of thanks from the many lives that she touched during her career. She was a loving mother, balancing her career and home life with ease. She was an avid reader, enjoyed decorating her home and visiting with her grandson. All that knew her will remember her kind and giving ways. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Paul Adlon Schultz in 2010, her mother and father, Elizabeth and Ross Monks, and her brother, Ross Monks, Jr. She is survived by her son, Mark Schultz, and her daughter, Donna Schultz, as well as her devoted sister, Patricia Jenkin, her daughter-in-law, Heather Schultz, and grandson, Ryan Schultz.
