Obituary

E. Jean Levine, 85, of Bridgewater, NJ, passed away peacefully on February 7, 2018 at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in Somerville, NJ. Jean was born in 1932 to Henry & Anna Zimmerman in Raritan, NJ where she grew up, and graduated from Somerville High School in 1950. She also attended the College of William & Mary. Jean served as the municipal registrar for both Raritan and Branchburg for ten years. Having lived in the area all her life, and working in this position, she knew everyone and was very beloved. Jean's hobbies included avid reading and bowling, and she was an accomplished singer, often performing at weddings and other special occasions. She also sang with many choral groups over the years. Jean was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Grand Soloist of New Jersey in 1965–1966. Decorating and floral design were Jean's passions. She and her mother, Anna, even ran a small florist shop for a time, which operated out of the Zimmerman home in Raritan. Jean's homes were always beautifully decorated and many of her friends sought her advice to enhance their homes. Her holiday ornamentation was especially stunning. Jean regularly attended the Third Reformed Church in Raritan where she also taught Sunday school. Jean spent much of her life caring for others. She lovingly took care of both her husband, Hy, and her mother, for years when they were ill. Jean was predeceased by her husband, Hyman Levine, in 1982. They were married in 1967, and lived in Plainfield, NJ. Her brother, Andrew Zimmerman, of Kent, OH also predeceased her in 2008. Jean is survived by her four nieces, Victoria and husband, Don Farrell of Nokomis, FL; Karen Legnini of Trumansburg, NY; Kristine Olden of San Francisco, CA; Diane Olden of Ithaca, NY; as well as her cousin, Jon Hlafter and his wife Patricia, of Princeton, NJ. Jean also has a great niece, Sarah Legnini, with son Lucca McGranaghan, who live in San Francisco, CA; and a great nephew, Seth Legnini, who lives in Trumansburg, NY, as well as very special friends, Lucille McCobb, Margaret Van Houghton and Elissa Martinez, all of Raritan, NJ and Catherine Gantner-Wilbur of Manville, NJ. Jean's memorial service will take place at the Branchburg Funeral Home, located at 910 US Highway 202 South, Branchburg, NJ 08876, on Monday, February 19, 2018 at 2:00 pm (Phone: 908-917-2825). Jean's wishes were to be cremated and her ashes scattered, which the family will honor in a private service at Chimney Rock in Bridgewater, NJ.
