Bruce Oscar Linn, 91, of Bridgewater, NJ passed away on Saturday, February 20, 2021 at his home with his wife by his side. Born in East Orange, NJ, Bruce grew up in East Orange and in Short Hills, NJ and Woodhaven, NY where he met his wife in high school. Bruce graduated from Duke University with a BS and PhD in Chemistry. He spent his entire career as a research chemist for Merck, Sharpe, and Dohme in Rahway, NJ, where his name is on 23 patents and numerous scientific papers. Five of the patents are on the drug Ivermectin, formerly named Avermectin. This drug proved extremely effective against African River Blindness which had been blinding and kill untold numbers of people in West Africa. It was responsible for wiping that disease off the map. Ivermectin has also been found useful in treating the corona virus. His work and his family were his life – he loved working at Merck, he loved his home, his yard, and living in Bridgewater. He was a long time member of St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Bridgewater and enjoyed lively discussions at the Adult Forum. Bruce was listed in American Men of Science and was a member of the American Chemistry Society. Bruce was very handy at fixing things around the house and enjoyed exercise. Swimming, running outdoors and lifting weights were his favorites. He is preceded in death by his beloved parents Emma and Oscar Linn, a sister Nancy Fox and a daughter Tina Linn Nitowski. Surviving are his loving wife of 69 years, Jane Dorothy Linn, two dear sons, Rev. David Bruce and wife Barbara Linn of Rome, NY; Jeffrey Bennett and wife Jen-Nai Linn of Edison, NJ; six cherished grandchildren, Christopher, Alex, Diana, Laura, John, Joanna and five adored great grandchildren, Lucas, Julia, Jacob, Eric and Andrew. A memorial service will be held at St. Martin's Church 1350 Washington Valley Road, Bridgewater, NJ at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made in Bruce's memory to St. Joseph's Indian School, P.O. Box 100, Chamberlain, SD 57325-0100. Committal is private. Due to the pandemic, St. Martin's Church is at maximum capacity for the funeral mass that will be taking place on March 5, 2021
