Dr. Brojen Bordoloi, a pillar of the Assamese community in North America, passed away on Thursday February 22, 2018 at his home in Bridgewater, N.J. A pioneer of Assamese culture and language overseas, Dr. Bordoloi performed countless naam-kirtans to mark occasions, both happy and sad, of the growing diaspora in the U.S. and Canada. He introduced bhaona, a form of religious and theatrical storytelling, at a convention, designing props and costumes himself. Dr. Bordoloi retired as an engineer from the Metropolitan Transit Authority. After doing his undergraduate degree in India, he completed postgraduate work at New York University. In more recent years, he received a PhD from Tezpur University; his thesis examined missionary contributions to Assam. His sense of community extended beyond his native Assamese as he made close friends carpooling to work or chatting at the senior center. Dr. Bordoloi lived in New York City, Long Island, Charlotte, N.C., any many more before settling in New Jersey. He is survived by his wife Kalpana (Mamoni), son Pallav (Ritu), daughter Ruby, daughter-in-law Poonam, son-in-law Partha and grandchildren Anjali and Ajay. He also leaves behind a large and loving extended family, coast to coast, many of whom he helped on their journeys in America. And he leaves a rich legacy among friends who became family, who will always think of him when they hear the beat of a khol or the chants of naam.
