Doris Jaqueline Altonji, age 95, passed away peacefully on March 28th, 2020 at Fellowship Village in Basking Ridge, NJ. She was born on March 5, 1925 in Brooklyn, NY and grew up there. Doris was preceded in death by her parents Regi and Margaret Merhige and three sisters Ruth Bashur, Mildred Cirona, and Joan Kain. After graduating from Bay Ridge High School, Doris attended classes at City College of New York and worked at the Guarantee Trust Company. She married Edmund Russell Altonji in 1950. They enjoyed 55 years together until his death in 2005, living in Brooklyn NY, Pequannock, West Caldwell, and Oakland NJ, East Haddam CT, and Flemington NJ. Doris resided at Fellowship Village in Basking Ridge for the past 13 1/2 years.
Doris' family was her life's work. She was a devoted wife and a loving mother to her five children, and took great pride in her grandchildren. While running a busy household, she earned her bachelor's degree in Education from William Paterson University and taught in the Catholic and public schools of Oakland and Franklin Lakes NJ. She also served as a volunteer with the church, schools, and the scouts, and enjoyed painting and reading.
Doris is survived by her children, Thomas Altonji, Joseph Altonji (Cynthia), Paul Altonji (Julie), John Altonji (Wilhelmina), and Rosemary Pfreundschuh (George); grandchildren Christopher, Steven, Matthew and Mary Altonji, John and Sarah Pfreundschuh; brother-in-law James Altonji; sister-in-laws Arlene, Amalia and Barbara Altonji; and numerous nieces and nephews. Contributions may be made in her memory to Catholic Charities in Bridgewater, NJ.
A private graveside prayer service will be held on April 3, 2020 and a memorial Mass will be planned for a future date TBD.
