Obituary

Charles R. Swody Branchburg, NJ Charles Swody, 101, of Branchburg, NJ, passed away on Saturday, December 18, 2021 at RWJ in Somerville. Born in Elizabeth, NJ, Charles resided in Green Brook for 33 years before moving to Branchburg 16 years ago. Charles graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Elizabeth, Class of 1938 where he lettered in track and cross country. After graduating, Charles went on to serve our country in the U.S. Army as a Signal Corp from 1942-1945. During that time, he was awarded the American Theater Ribbon Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, two Bronze Stars, and a good conduct medal. Also a sharpshooter medal. After leaving the Army, Charles became the Chief Fire Fighter of Elizabeth for 43 years before retiring in 1986. He was awarded several commendations for life rescues during his service. Mr. Swody was a member of the Fireman's Local 777 Union, the president and member of the officers' Union for 2 years. Charles studied at Rutgers's University where he took many fire courses. He was an avid reader and Yankees fan, enjoyed watching T.V., and loved cruising around the world. The only thing Mr. Swody enjoyed the most was spending quality time with his family especially his grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Florence and Edward Swody, and two sisters, Florence Laut and Ruth McGinnity. Surviving are his loving wife of 80 years, Elizabeth "Betty" Schindler Swody, one dear son Charles and wife Kathy Swody of Rahway, NJ; a loving daughter Pam and husband Mark Ansbro of Branchburg, NJ; three cherished grandchildren, Cheryl, Charles, and Robert, four adored great - grandchildren, Michael, Jessica, Nicholas, and Brielle, and five great- great grandchildren. Viewing and burial are private. Memorial contributions may be made in Charles memory to the American Diabetes Association https://www.diabetes.org/ in lieu of flowers.
