Carmen Z. Gozum, M.D. Carmen Z. Gozum, M.D., 87, of Branchburg, NJ, passed away peacefully at her home December 1st surrounded by her loving family. Born in Manila, Philippines, she immigrated to the Unites States in 1957 and lived in Pennsylvania most of her life — Philadelphia for several years and in Bethlehem for 36 years — before moving to Branchburg 18 years ago to be closer to her children and grandchildren. Carmen earned her medical and undergraduate degrees from the University of the Philippines before traveling to the United States to become board-certified in both Pediatric Cardiology and Emergency Medicine. She completed her internship at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, NY and her general Residency at Princeton Hospital. While living in PA, she finished her Residency at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and then moved to Easton Hospital where she was the Director of the Emergency Department. Prior to her retirement she worked at Redi-Care Medical Center in Easton, PA. She was a passionate physician who was recognized by the American Medical Association for over 40 years of practice before her retirement in 2000. She enjoyed playing the piano, sewing, baking, listening to Italian opera and attending operas at the Met in NYC. More than anything, she loved spending time with her eight grandchildren, rarely missing their many sports events. Carmen was preceded in death by her beloved parents Dr. Carmen Campos Zita and Tomás Zita; her loving husband of 57 years, Alfredo T. Gozum (2017); and her dear sister Milagros Rodriguez. Surviving are two loving daughters, Sylvia and husband Jamie Shubert of Somerset, NJ and Patricia and husband Celso Sánchez of Highland Park, NJ; her beloved son, Alfred "Freddy" Gozum of Branchburg, NJ; five sisters, Dr. Alegria C. Zita of Manila, Philippines; Bella and husband Jose Mabanta of Manila, Philippines, Lucia and husband Dominador Cepeda of Manila, Philippines, Dr. Rosario Agular of Belmont, Massachusetts, and Zenaida and husband Dieter Reichert of Manila, Philippines; her brother, Tomás C. Zita, Jr. and wife Katherine of Basking Ridge, NJ; and eight cherished grandchildren, Tomás, Gabriela, CJ, Maxwell, Isabella, Grayson, Paisley, and Emerson. She also has many beloved nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Thursday December 5, 2019 from 1-3:30pm, followed by a 4 PM prayer service, both at Zarephath Christian Church, 2 Ministry Drive, Zarephath, NJ.
