Obituary for Guy D'Urso

Guy D’Urso, age 89, entered into eternal rest on May 21, 2019, in Bridgewater, NJ.
Born in Brooklyn, NY to Pasquale and Mary D’Urso in 1929, young Gaetano (his birth name) spent his formative years raised by his paternal grandparents, in the town of Toritto, province of Bari, in Southern Italy. Shortly after his arrival to Italy, WWII broke out, prohibiting travel back to the U.S. until 1945. It was then that an American GI got word to his grandparents that Guy’s parents wanted him back in the States.

Back in Brooklyn, Guy attended Lincoln High School and despite initially not speaking any English, graduated on-time. Shortly afterwards, Guy went to work for a man who owned a produce delivery route,. and it was during this time that he met the woman who would be the center of his life for the next 68 years. The lovely Anna Massaro, later known as Anne, lived on Stillwell Ave., directly above the small market where Guy delivered produce.

Drafted in 1951, Guy served in the U.S. Army, mostly as a communications technician — climbing poles and installing telephone lines. Little did he know this was to become the seedling that would grow into his successful career. Just two weeks after his Army discharge, Guy accepted a position with AT&T, one that would upwardly progress for the next 35 years.

Guy and Anne were married on May 23, 1954, settled in Brooklyn and had three children. Then in 1965, the family moved to Baldwin, Long Island, where they added two more. Life for the D’Ursos on Middle Bay was wonderful, but in 1977 Guy moved his family to Bridgewater NJ to be closer to the new AT&T headquarters. After the kids left the house, Guy and Anne decided to build a home on Silver Bay in Toms River, on the NJ shore. This was the place where their children and grandchildren would be drawn to visit for the next 13 years, and visit they did. Life was good.

Guy’s legacy is his love of the sea and seashore, his strong will to provide for family and keep them safe, his pride in his Italian heritage (and all the good food that comes with that). He was extremely charitable and humble, and he possessed a strong desire to always do right.

He is predeceased by his wife of over 64 years, Anne D’Urso, his parents, and his sister, Angelina DeNicolo.

He is survived by their children: Maria Alsamadisi & husband Morsy of Bridgewater; Patrick D’Urso and wife Noemy of Poughkeepsie, NY; Anne Louise and husband Stephen Rose of Malden, MA; Guy S. D’Urso and wife Bonnie Baltazar of El Dorado Hills, CA; and John D’Urso and Alissa Sartorini of Bridgewater. Guy is also survived by his 10 grandchildren and dozens of relatives and friends.

Viewing for Guy will be held from 4-8 PM on Tuesday, May 28th, at Branchburg Funeral Home, 910 Route 202 South, Branchburg NJ, 08876. A Catholic mass will be held at 10 AM on Wednesday, May 29th at Blessed Sacrament Church, 1890 Washington Valley Road, Martinsville, NJ 08836, followed by entombment at Somerset Hills Memorial Park in Basking Ridge.

Memorial contributions may be made in Guy’s memory to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, at 230 East Ohio Street, Suite 500, Chicago, Illinois 60611; or Doctors Without Borders USA, at P.O. Box 5030, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5030.
