Frank L. Carlone, 86, of Bridgewater, NJ, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. Born in North Providence, RI, he lived in Newark, NJ where he resided for 14 years, then resided in Bloomfield for 44 years, before moving to Bridgewater 25 years ago.
Frank loved the military and had an extensive and impressive record of service starting out with the United States Navy during the Korean War as an enlisted man aboard the Destroyer Escort USS Heyliger, DE-510. He later served with the U.S. Seventh Army in Europe as part of the Army of Occupation in Germany assigned to the 529th Field Artillery Observation Battalion. He retired as Full Colonel in the New Jersey Army National Guard, HQ 50th Armored Division, in 1987 where he also served as Inspector General and was inducted into the United States Army Artillery O.C.S. Hall of Fame at Fort Sill, Oklahoma in May 2000.

In 1981 he received a Commendation from the US Senate & Jefferson County, NY, for establishing a non-Alcohol recreational facility at Fort Drum, NY known as the “Day by Day Place”. He also received the “Legion of Honor”, Chapel of Four Chaplains award in 1985 and in 1997 Honorable Order of Saint Barbara.

In his early years, Frank worked for Western Electric and later for Prudential Insurance company as a Manager in sales before his retirement in 1987.
He then started and devoted much of his time to the National Guard Group Life Insurance Program which provided valuable benefits to many Families and members of the New Jersey National Guard.
He worked as a Circulation director for The Italian Tribune News of Newark and Montclair since 1989. He also coordinated the military contingent for the annual Columbus Day Parade for many years. He was also named Columbus Day Parade “Man of the Year” in 1985.

He was a life member of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), was a past president and life member of the Essex Troop where he had received the prestigious Fleming Award in 2000, a life member of Bloomfield VFW Post 711, was a former member of the Bloomfield chapter of UNICO where he once served as chapter President, and member of the Bradley Gardens American Legion Post 0327 and a veteran perpetual member of the Military Order of the World Wars.
Frank had a great sense of humor and always loved to play jokes and tell humorous stories to his family. He loved cooking, attending his grandson’s baseball games, visiting with his family and carrying on family traditions. He was a big fan of the hit TV show Survivor and loved listening to music from the big bands with Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, and the Dorsey brother being a few of his favorites.
He is preceded in death by his beloved parents Frank and Jennie (nee Verrecchia) Carlone.
Surviving are his loving wife of 60 years, Viola Abraham Carlone; two dear sons, Frank J. and his wife Lynn of Westfield, NJ and John M. of Bridgewater, NJ; his loving daughter, Joanmarie Carlone and companion Roberto Perez of Long Branch, NJ; two wonderful sisters, Marie C. Carlone of East Hanover, NJ, and Gerry Carlone of East Hanover, NJ; two cherished grandsons, Frankie and Michael; and many wonderful nieces and nephews and extended family.
Viewing will be held Sunday, March 4, 2018 from 2:00-7:00 pm at the Branchburg Funeral Home 910 US Highway 202 South, Branchburg, NJ 08876.
Funeral services will start with a prayer at 9:15 am on Monday, March 5, 2018 followed by a 10:00 am funeral liturgy at St. Ann’s R.C. Church 45 Anderson St, Raritan, NJ 08869.
Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover, NJ.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in his memory to St. Ann’s R.C. Church or Vocationist Father’s, 90 Brooklake Rd, Florham Park, NJ 07932.
